Speak with one voice!

INTRODUCING THE MARYLAND MILITARY COALITION (MMC)

Veterans and military members can accomplish more in the Maryland General Assembly when the military community comes together as one powerful voice. That’s the reason for establishment of the Maryland Military Coalition (MMC), now updating to reintroduce goals that did not survive the 2021 legislative time frame, but are updated for the 2022 session.

MMC will work hard to project a clear, united message to Maryland lawmakers. With about 460,000 military-connected people in the State, the need to “speak with one voice” is very clear.

Also see MMC's legislative agenda for 2022.  It featured items of interest to actively serving members, retirees, and surviving spouses and family members, as well as health care in general.  In addition, going to the MMC’s page www.mdmilcoalition.org/advocacy gives you access to a wealth of resources, including a legislation tracker that identifies critical bills, and information on steps to follow if someone wishes to present testimony in favor of a certain bill during the time of COVID.

The Prioritized 2022 Goals Are:

  • Mental Health & Suicide Prevention
    • Ensure annual funding of the Sheila Hixon Behavioral Health. Services.Matching Grant Program (currently, the Administration “may request $2.5 million for the Hixon Matching Grants starting in 2022).
    • Expand the use of the Maryland Veterans Trust Fund to include complementary and alternative (CAM) therapies for the Veterans Grant Program (SB 236)
  • Veterans & Their Families
    • Create Commission for the new Women Veterans Memorial (HB 167 ).
    • Expand Property Tax Credit for Severely Disabled Veterans (HB 224 and SB 148).
    • Establish a State Tax “Check Off” for the Veterans Trust Fund.
    • Establish Resources for Counseling/Job Readiness Support for Homeless Veterans.
    • Complete development / delivery of Second Veterans Home and begin planning for third and potentially a fourth veterans home in Maryland.
  • Uniformed Services Retirement Programs
    • Reduce/Eliminate State Tax on Uniformed Services Retired Pay (SB 130)
  • Currently Serving
    • Health Occupations – Temporary Licensure, Certification & Registration for Service Members, Veterans & Active Duty Spouses (HB 112 and SB 230).
    • Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program (HB 008).
  • Veteran Entrepreneurship
    • To Be Determined
